Can I apply a light coating of oil or grease when storing a firearm?

Applying additional oil or grease beyond what is needed for the firearm to be functional is not needed.  A very light application of gun oil or grease can be applied to metal surfaces if desired however, anything beyond a light coating can result in a big mess inside of the bag.
